- Performance reviews are annual, monthly, or quarterly one-on-one meetings to discuss employee goals and performance. Earlier this year, a large company brought me in to address inconsistencies in their performance review process. At this company, reviews created anxiety, defensiveness, and executives felt the reviews were inconsistent. Employees felt promotions and pay raises seemed random. Productivity, revenues, and morale were suffering. Here's the simple, three-step plan I gave their managers and supervisors to reframe the review as positive and help their employees thrive. It's very similar to a one-on-one coaching session but a bit more formal, since there's more writing on it. First, your company probably has a self-assessment form for the employee to fill out. This form allows the employee to express how they think they're doing in their job in a formal setting.
