- The other day I ran into Phil. He's a colleague I really like but don't get to see very often. We smiled, said hello, and then he asked, "So what are you working on right now "that has you most excited?" I lit up. What a cool question. We had a great conversation about one of my new projects. I walked away feeling terrific. That short conversation with Phil was a wonderful example of best practices for empathetic communication. Let's break it down and see what we can learn. First, Phil was genuinely glad to see me. His smile and his greeting were enthusiastic. Even though we were both on our way to other meetings, for a couple of minutes he was excited to have a conversation. When someone looks pleased to encounter you, communication starts off on the right foot. Next, we went beyond small talk. Rather than a generic "how are you", Phil asked a specific question.
