Communicate your leave to your manager

Communicate your leave to your manager
- It's 10 p.m. You've just posted a picture of your baby bump on Facebook. Five minutes later, you get a ping from your boss, hey, I just saw the news, congrats. Wait, what? This is not how you wanted her to find out. Sharing the news about your upcoming family leave is an important discussion, and pretty soon, you'll know the best way to have it, and it's not chatting on Facebook. If yours is happy news, you're pregnant or adopting a baby, you may be anxious to tell your friends but as that opening scene suggests, you can't risk your boss learning this important news from a Facebook post, so you have to tell him first. The same goes for less than happy news. Word will get out quickly if you have a seriously ill family member, too. So it's safer to tell your manager your plans than to let her speculate about them. The initial conversation you have is just the first of many you will have to sort out the details…
