- I'm originally British, and I've been living and working in the U.S. for years. There are many different American English words, accents, and pronunciations. Certain words are less obvious, more nuanced. After some puzzled faces and curious reactions, I realized I needed to uncover these words to ensure I am understood. For example, homely means cozy and homelike in the U.K. but unattractive and plain in the U.S., not the way to compliment my host as I enter their house. In the U.K., clever generally means smart. But in the U.S., clever can imply cunning, learning a trick, rather than brain aptitude. I thought someone was recommending a person to hire when they were actually implying something rather different.
