- Just like you'll have times when people aren't reaching their performance standards, you'll happily have times when people are doing great. As a manager we want people meeting and exceeding expectations, right? Since we want expectations to be met and exceeded, then we need to do what it takes to maintain that once it's happening. So how do we manage high performers? First, keep coaching them. The highest performers in any endeavor have coaches. Make time for them and focus on their needs. Ignoring them will leave them frustrated, likely unfulfilled and quite possibly looking for a new job and a new manager. Reward and recognize them. But I'm not talking about HR programs and gift cards here, though there's nothing wrong with those things.
