- An employee came into my office feeling unmotivated because of a colleague they couldn't seem to communicate with. After talking to them, I decided to mediate a conversation between both employees. It quickly became apparent that neither was interested in hearing the other. Both were unable to demonstrate enough self-awareness and appreciation for differing points of view to understand the other's perspective. They lack the emotional intelligence to deal with the situation. Emotional intelligence is the ability to identify, assess, and influence one's own feeling and those of others. And it's now commonly accepted that to be an effective leader, you have to leverage both your IQ and your EQ, or emotional intelligence quotient. We all understand IQ, but EQ is relatively new. HR pros are routinely in situations where we have to coach leaders on how to leverage the skill to motivate colleagues to engage in the right behaviors.
