Clarifying your responsibilities

- If you're placed in a matrix environment, it's critical to clarify your responsibilities and know what you're accountable for delivering. Sit down with both of your bosses. Have them define your objectives and your scope of responsibility. Get clarity on your decision-making authority. What areas of the business do you own? Which ones do you just contribute to? What decisions can you make and which ones can't you make? What are your guardrails for decision making? Can you spend up to $40,000, $50,000? Where's the line? When you see goals that are in conflict between your two bosses, surface the issue and have your bosses resolve it between them. If you don't, you'll have to deal with the fallout when you don't hit one of those two objectives that are in conflict. I worked for a credit card company at one point. We had a marketing team that was trying to increase the number of accounts that we had. We had a collections team that was trying to reduce the risk of the overall portfolio.…
