Caught in a lie
- 60% of adults can't have a 10 minute conversation without lying at least once, and they tell an average of two to three lies. Stealing or fraud or big lies need to be addressed firmly with HR present, but white lies, on the other hand, are unfortunately often part (laughs) of doing business. But that doesn't mean they need to be ignored. If you catch someone in a white lie, first give them the chance to backtrack by saying something like: are you sure, or have you looked into that? Sometimes people simply misspeak, and you want to give them a graceful way out. If they continue to lie, present the facts using language like: it was my understanding that, or I was told. This reduces the urge for the other person to get defensive, because it makes it about the fact, not about the behavior or lying.
