- What does your gut say? This is one of the most powerful questions in your coaching arsenal. We have three brain centers in our body, head, heart, and gut. The head is often telling us what we should do. This is what author Martha Beck calls the social self. What does our manager want from us, our parents, our partner, our friends, society, the vague they. When you hear this type of language, the shoulds, it's helpful to pause and tell your coachee. Let's do a quick exercise called head, heart, gut. Given this conundrum or the situation you're in, what does your head say, and let them respond. Next, you can ask what does your heart say, and finally, what does your gut say? Now, I know getting into the heart and gut stuff at work might feel a little edgy for some of you, but I encourage you to try it. At the end of the day, we are all people.
