I always like to start by identifying the main goal of my research. So in this case, I'm trying to determine how my next product might address a gap in the industry and how to best distinguish this offering market-wise. Next I would design a plan outline which qualitative and quantitative research methods would help me collect the right information to address my goals. So, okay, so from a quantitative standpoint I would definitely want to gather all the numerical data about the number of customers in a market, and any high level trends on their buying behavior. I would also conduct surveys or reference industry reports.
