- I'm proof that you can switch to a career as a developer from another field. My bachelor's degree was in journalism with a focus on graphic design. And so I worked as a graphic artist for years. I had a good portfolio of design work, but no experience building sites before then. Here's how I made that switch. First, I made a learning plan for myself. I bought a ton of software and I started building things as soon as possible. I started by reading the manuals of the software I bought cover to cover, and then online documentation. I also bought a subscription to lynda.com, the predecessor to LinkedIn Learning. I found that video training worked well for me, but that wasn't enough. I also needed some experience building real projects. I joined a local Ad 2 group from the Orlando Advertising Federation and asked if I could build their website.
