Can I explain a missing skill in my cover letter?
(mysterious music) - So can you explain your missing skill in the cover letter? Definitely, now keep in mind that this strategy is going to be most impactful if you can get this thing directly into the hands of a decision maker. The reason is that if you're attaching this with your application, as you apply through an online portal, it's a gamble if your information will even get to human eyeballs. It's got to first pass-through the resume scanning software. Software that's looking for the facts; keywords, credentials, titles. Computers just don't know the concept of gray area. You're either a yes or a no. People on the other hand, they can absolutely compute gray areas. That said, if you're maybe not a blaringly obvious on paper fit, because you lack a skill, or some other credential that they're looking for, you can use the cover letter to spell out why you think you'd still be a great fit for that roll.
