Building trust for collaboration
- A client asked me to evaluate the lack of collaboration in a department. "I think we've lost our foundation," she said. When I asked her what she meant by that, the manager replied, "You know, "the foundation for collaboration: trust." She was right, of course. Trust is the foundation for all successful collaboration, and it's needed on three levels. As I describe the different levels of trust and offer strategy for strengthening them, think about how you could improve each one. The first level is trust in yourself. The biggest obstacle to the self-trust we all need for collaboration may be our own inner critic. When we focus on our weaknesses rather than reinforcing our strengths, we are less likely to speak up. If you want to build inner trust, here are two strategies.
