- Now that you've done the work to understand your career transition, you'll need to build an effective marketing campaign to make your move. Unlike a first job search where your resume is often the lead, the mid-career search is vastly different. Tapping into your network will be your lead and your resume is a backup document. You need to focus on sending the right message at the right time and to the right people. The first step is to organize and prioritize your professional contacts. If you're looking to move up in your organization, you need to look at your cheerleaders and sponsors. In other words, identify those that will be able to get you promoted. If you're looking at moving outside of your current organization, you should build a spreadsheet listing your target organizations with your list of contacts in the next column and then any current openings that are now available.
