- The first step to seeing into the future is learning to scan the external environment. External, or environmental scanning, means looking at macro forces for clues on how things are changing and the impact it might have on the current state. This contextual intelligence is critical to helping leaders understand emerging opportunities, and ride the momentum of external change. In a recent public letter to shareholders, Jeff Bezos shared his leadership focus on embracing external trends. He says, "The outside world can push you into day two "if you won't or can't embrace powerful trends quickly." Day two is his metaphor for complacency.
