- Hockey fans may recall a quote from Wayne Gretzky, considered by many to be the greatest to play the game. When asked about the secret to his success he said, "I skate to where the puck is going, "not to where it's been." Swap sport for your industry, and we can apply that practice to ourselves. How can we skate to where the puck is going? Anticipation is a core futurist skill. We might not be able to predict the future with certainty, but we can see where it's going, by learning to recognize patterns, connections, and identifiable trends. Let's use an example from the world of tech to see how this plays out. In 1965, Gordon Moore, co-founder of Intel, noted that microchips were becoming approximately twice as powerful every two years. Coined as Moore's Law, this statement about the size and speed of transistors created a new baseline. To this day, tech continues to get smaller, less expensive and more powerful. This…
