- Most leaders today are aware of the need to appear confident and assertive because it adds to their leadership presence. But fewer understand the importance of also projecting empathy and warmth. This may become a limiting factor for leaders looking to increase collaboration. Power, status, and authority are non-verbally displayed by expanding into height and space, by standing with your feet about hip width apart, so that you look and feel grounded, and by speaking in a self-confident manner. So it's easy to see why in many situations these are still the most effective body language signals you can send. But as a collaborative leader, your goal is to make team members feel valued, respected and included. To help you reach that goal, you'd be wise to warm up your body language.
