Benefits and barriers to listening

- Listening has always fascinated me as a leadership skill. In part because it has so much power in making us better leaders. I find it compelling for four reasons. First, we know from research that employees who feel listened to are more satisfied, more engaged and have lower turnover. Additionally, they tend to be more agreeable. They tend to tell us what's really going on. So we can actually solve problems better. This ultimately helps us make better decisions and coach and develop our teams better. Next, we generally think we're great listeners, when in reality, we aren't. And finally, it's a learnable skill that we can improve on in some pretty simple ways. The first step to effective listening is to recognize barriers and work to reduce them. And that's what I will show you to do in this video. These barriers fall into two categories, external and internal. External barriers are often the easiest to overcome.…
