- We can't have a conversation about supporting gender equality at work without addressing the topic of equal pay. The latest research from the American Association of University Women found that women who were working full time are still paid, on average, only 80 cents for every dollar paid to a full-time working man, and this figure has only improved by less than a nickel throughout the entire 21st century. There are lots of factors that contribute to the gender wage gap. The greatest is still occupational segregation, which tends to result in society valuing traditional women's work, like caregiving industries, less than fields dominated by men. Interestingly, as more men enter these fields like nursing, for example, the average pay goes up for all workers. Another huge factor is what's known as the motherhood penalty.
