- Just as there are good leaders, managers, teachers, and salespeople, there are good coaches and poor coaches. The good news is no matter where you fall on the spectrum, you can improve. When it comes to coaching, the difference between excellent and poor primarily comes down to three things: relationship, knowledge, and wisdom. Let's start with relationships. In order to succeed in coaching, the first step is to establish strong rapport built on a foundation of trust. People will be more open to advice and counsel from someone they know, like, and trust. First and foremost, you need to focus on liking the people you coach. So here's what you need to do. Regularly look for opportunities to connect on what you have in common. Pay attention and offer genuine compliments whenever warranted. Finally, take time to personally get to know the people you coach.
