Behavior: Core values
- Does your organization have core values? Do you have them memorized? Does your workforce? So, so, so many organizations create core values because they think they're supposed to. But then they don't do anything useful with them. They just sit on the website for the world to see but the organization doesn't actually use them. Core values are the driver of employee behavior. You can and should absolutely use them to create your positive work environment. First, ensure they're in your performance management system, on your forms, and discussed in monthly or quarterly check-ins. Then you can measure people on whether they're living the core values or not. Certainly there's no room for bullying in your core values, so anyone engaging in that behavior would be addressed. Second, make sure your core values are part of your interview process. Ask people behavior-based interview questions related to the values. And ask them what your core values mean to them.
