Becoming an intentional mentor
- How a person learns to lead is often based on how they've been lead. So if you want to develop great leaders and employees, you'll want to be intentional about how you lead. And that starts with choosing people you like to mentor. But how do you do this? Start by looking at the big picture. Think five or 10 years down the road. Who do you think will be replacing you and how can you help them grow? As a leader, your viewpoint is not enough to get a wholistic look at someone else's growth opportunities. You'll want to look at the feedback the employee has received. What do people that have worked on projects with them say about them? Those peers have the inside scoop on your mentee's character, productivity level and their interpersonal skills. Compiling this feedback will help you design a plan to really move that person forward. Then, go out of your way to elevate and train each person on your team.
