- Given the blistering pace of digital disruption, organizations that can act with speed are more likely to be rewarded than those which can't. As always, it's important for organizations to move at least as fast as their rate of external change. It's easy to imagine a seemingly strong leader atop of a command and control structure being able to make rapid-fire decisions. However, this is a little more than fantasy land since the leader's impulsive decisions would be guided by little more than gut feel. With rare exceptions, the quality of such decisions would be poor, and implementation would be half-hearted and chaotic at best. The answer lies in building or becoming a much flatter organization that can move with speed while making mostly smart decisions. On the face of it, there are internal contradictions in this goal, too. Flat structures could lead to chaos as one unit of the organization may not know what another…
