From the course: Creating a Career Plan

Become a lifelong learner

- Your education is never complete. When I began pursuing my doctorate a few years ago, some friends asked if I was too old. I thanked them for sharing their opinions and did it anyway. In a working world where you'll always be looking for the next project or client, part of your self-marketing is constantly learning what's new in your field. I encourage you to subscribe to relevant industry publications, both online and off, and attend trade shows and conferences on a regular basis. As you do that, be prepared to discover new areas and apps and programs and devices that you know nothing about and commit to being trained in how to use and/or navigate them. That training may take a number of forms. It could be individual coaching, a one-off course to brush up on a particular topic, getting a certificate so the world knows you're qualified in that area, all the way up to a degree. Certificates and degrees will stamp you with a credibility that will open new opportunities, a new starting line for your self-marketing. Technology is changing the world so quickly that you're learning something new all the time. Social media didn't exist 10 years ago. Streaming, apps, AI, driver-less cars, all relatively new and changing as we speak. Make no mistake, every industry is affected. Your clients expect you to know the latest trends, and in many cases, to be more current than they are. Let's continue the conversation. Shall we? You can reach me at chazaustin.com. On my website, you'll find links to both my books and my Facebook group, Find Work with Dr. Chaz. Feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns you may have about your career. I'm here to help. Thank you.
