- Hi, I'm Yasmeen Akhtar. - And I'm Debbie Danon. - And together we're Trustlab, a consultancy that helps organizations to develop courageous approaches for leadership and inclusion. - And today, we're going to be sharing our experiences, and advice to help you become what we call a super-collaborator. - So I'm Yasmeen. I'm co-founder and director of Trustlab, and an expert on developing leadership and inclusion. Over the last 10 years, I've supported 500 amazing leaders to achieve major success in their careers. People I've worked with have gone on to become chief executives, politicians, and international journalists. But what I'm really proud of is the diversity of people I've worked with. Hundreds of nationalities and languages coming from different cultures, religions, and social backgrounds. I believe with no exception everybody deserves an equal shot at success. My teams at work always get a hundred percent of my commitment toward their development because I take what I call project me really seriously. And you must too because you're here, and you're investing in yourself, and in your career. This year I took a leap of faith, and I launched a company with Debbie. We provide cutting edge solutions to diversity, inclusion and leadership. And what we're talking to you about today is absolutely at the heart of our approach. - And I'm Debbie and I'm a trainer coach, and leadership and inclusion experts. I was one of the founding five of what's now a leading inter-faith charity called Three Faiths Forum. And I've led many teams over the years, including a training team within a boutique learning, and development consultancy which helps apprentices, interns, graduates, and managers at leading companies to unlock their talents at work. And I really enjoyed that. And now I'm working with Yasmeen at Trustlab helping people and organizations to become more inclusive. And for me, the ultimate goal of inclusion work is enabling people to recognize, and appreciate the unique gifts, and perspectives that each of us brings. And ensuring that we're all doing everything we can to help each other bring out our best because that responsibility in my view belongs to all of us. - In many ways collaboration is not a luxury. It's an absolute necessity. All of us are working in an uber-connected world, and it's a global market. Businesses have sites across different countries with shared infrastructure and a massive pool of talent. There's pressure on all of us to operate effectively and sustainably resulting in sharing space, resources and people. So partnerships across sectors in between companies are uncommon. And in this context, they will only continue to become all the more essential. So if you want to build value at work, or develop skills for future work, the art of working successfully with others, both inside your organization, and externally is absolutely vital. Whether you're working with your team, your clients or partners, learning to collaborate effectively can transform your experience and your impact. - Yasmeen is absolutely right. Working with others is not just a nice to have it's essential to your success. If you learn the habits of building something with others, I guarantee it will accelerate your growth. You'll expand your skills. You'll develop new professional experience, and you'll build a trusted network who can champion you even when you're not in the room. When former team members I once managed ask me for references or for recommendations on LinkedIn I'm always happy to champion those who are great collaborators. Who offered their unique talents and skills generously to the service of something bigger. I'll admit, I have to think a little harder when asked to recommend those who were ego-driven who sought to take all the credit, or were unwilling to adapt to new projects or team dynamics. So if you're known to find ways to work well with people, even people you wouldn't normally get along with, your colleagues above you, below you and around you will champion you like never before. - So what's super-collaboration? And how is it different to just good teamwork? So I've worked in teams, lots, lots of teams, and you've worked in teams I'm sure too. You get a task, you split it up and you get it done. And that is the complete and ultimate purpose. But this is completely different. It's more, it's an attitude that you adopt. A way of being that's open, it's generous. And it's really visionary where you enter into an experience and the experience surprises you, you know, enriches you, and you build value for yourself and everyone else. Where you lead as you alongside others who are also leading as themselves, and you all create something completely new. So our Trustlab we talk lots about super collaboration and what sets this way of working apart from any other. And here's the three principles that do. Firstly, you take a relational approach over one that's transactional. It's not about product, it's about people. And it's not an exchange or compromise in any way. Of course, there's times in the office where you do something for a colleague and they return the favor, but this is much more than that. It takes you to a completely different level. I've worked with people who can just never get companies to work with them, even when they have great product. And it's because they put people off, they treat others impersonally and then make it about things instead of relationships. - Secondly, you come to your collaboration from a place of abundance over scarcity. So many people are paralyzed with a fear of scarcity. And with that, you start in the minus before you even get going. We all have those people at work who are the naysayers, and the ones who live by I can-do mantra. Who are you more likely to work with or champion? - Thirdly, you make commitment to discovery. This is really important because otherwise you're not being open, generous or visionary. I ran a mentoring scheme for talented undergraduates, and for part of the program, we ask them to negotiate a project idea. You could always tell who is genuinely exploring options, and who was just trying to push their own idea. You know the people I mean, I'm sure you've met them. You have to hold your ideas lightly in super-collaboration and trust the process. That to us is the way of the super-collaborator. - [Debbie] In this course we will look at how to embrace a collaborative mindset, practice the 10 proven habits of super collaborators, and harness collaboration to power your career goals. - So let's get started.
