Basic trucking terminology
- In the U.S. about 70% of our freight gets moved by semi trucks. We call them big rigs, my friends in the UK call them lorries. But no matter what you call them, we should cover some basics about the kinds of trucks and trucking companies that you need to know when you're preparing for a supply chain certification. I'm going to focus on the U.S. terminology, but you may find that there are different words used in other parts of the world. Let's start by talking about the companies that are involved. A shipper is a company that owns the products, and they hire a carrier to move those products from one place to another. Some large shippers like Walmart own their own trucks and hire their own drivers. But if you don't have a dedicated fleet, then you hire a third-party logistics provider or a 3PL. Some 3PLs own a fleet of trucks and trailers. They're called asset-based 3PLs. But others act as brokers, or non-asset-based…
