Basic ocean shipping terminology

- Did you know that over 70% of the Earth's surface is covered by water? And that's why ocean shipping plays a big part in making global supply chains possible. Even though we've been sailing around for thousands of years, the business of ocean shipping has been revolutionized in the past century by the introduction of new technologies. Now, there's a lot of jargon in ocean shipping, so it helps to be familiar with some key terms. Let's start by talking about one of my favorite innovations, shipping containers. Shipping containers were first introduced in the 1950s. The idea was to have big, reusable boxes that could be easily moved from trucks to trains to ships without needing to repackage any of the goods inside. That was a huge breakthrough because it saved a lot of time and labor. The original size for shipping containers was eight feet by 20 feet long.
