Backcasting

Backcasting

- As you get more comfortable seeing the future, you can start thinking through the steps required to get there. To make that more personal, once you identify a preferred future, you can better identify the activities and milestones that will help create it. Forecasting typically starts with the present and projects out. Backcasting is the act of imagining a preferred future, then stepping back towards the present, probing at each step what has to happen to enable it to come true. Backcasting is anchored in an aspirational future state, rather than being constrained by the limitations of the current one. This leads people to create their own detail stories of the future, and leads naturally to the discussion, how can our product or service to that?
