- Relationships are nuanced and they can be especially complicated when there's a power imbalance, like there is in most mentoring relationships. I've seen so many well-intentioned mentorship pairs go sideways because the mentor or mentee had different expectations. So with that in mind, let me share with you the four common pitfalls of mentoring so you can spot them early and take steps to avoid them. First, be mindful of inherent bias. As human beings, we're naturally drawn to mentoring people who, well, look like us. They remind us of a younger version of ourselves. Now in a world where people in positions of power and authority have traditionally looked quite male and quite pale, this can pose a serious problem for many of us who are looking to advance our careers, and for any organization that wants to cultivate a culture of diversity and inclusion.
