- There's been a common factor at the heart of many of the problems I've run across as a project manager. That problem is rework, having to go back and redo tasks that you've already done. Now most of the time, we just take it in stride that there will be a certain amount of rework involved in any project. But MIT professor John Sterman has shown that rework has a compounding effect because having to redo a task often leads to delays, scope changes, and a cascading series of other tasks that also need to be redone. So one of the most valuable things that a project manager can do is to prevent the need for rework and we can do that in two ways. First, before the work gets started, get people involved in reviewing the plan and make sure that you haven't overlooked important details. Second, once the project gets going, watch for anything that could lead to a change in scope, schedule, or budget. And address it quickly. If…
