- Now let's pinpoint a few common negotiation traps along with some tips for avoiding them so you can be successful. Number one, take things slowly. Negotiations should not be rushed. You want to be thorough and thoughtful. If you feel yourself rushing, breathe and slow down. If you're being pinched for time, pause the negotiation and schedule more time to pick up where you left off. On that note, be sure you start your second round by recapping what you may have already agreed to, and then dive in to the rest. Number two, use silence to your advantage. When you anchor your salary for example, state your number and be quiet. Let your conversation partner think and absorb your request. Another great place for silence is in the counter offer stage. Take the time to think and consider before you respond. Speaking of anchoring, tip number three is always anchor with a solid number, not a range.
