- People don't underperform because they lack technical skills, people underperform because they lack soft skills. Soft skills are so important, soft is too soft a name for 'em. For now, let's at least call them nontechnical skills. In my mind, here are a few of the most important nontechnical skills a person needs to have to succeed in any job. Consistently completing high-quality work on time, remaining flexible enough to handle rapidly changing requirements, helping team members who are struggling, doing more than required all of the time.
