- We've all experienced moments when someone rushes us to act. Perhaps they're waiting for a quick decision, or they want us to approve work they've done. I've seen these moments in the highest levels of corporations, and I've seen that when people are rushed, their judgment is often impaired. So it's worth it to just take a moment to slow down, reclaim the missing minute, and make a careful choice. So how do we balance the need to make careful choices with that pressure that others sometimes put on us to move quickly? When a moment like this occurs, ask the person for a moment to pause. You could say something like can I just have 30 seconds or 60 seconds to think about it? Getting the other person's permission is important because when they choose to give this time to you, and they often will, it becomes easier for them to be more patient.
