- I think I was always somebody who cared about my fellow human being, and I always volunteered here and there, or gave money where I could. But my own personal struggle with a health condition called endometriosis is really what galvanized me to start the Endometriosis Foundation of America because nobody, not a doctor and not women, any women I knew, was talking about this disease, and yet it had infected every aspect of my life for over 20 years. And then I realized that over 200 million women around the world suffer in silence because of it. Now, 10 years later, people are talking about it. A lot of well-known women are talking about it, conferences are being held at medical schools, et cetera. So I think it was a huge win to open my mouth and talk about something so personal and frankly, not that pleasant to talk about.
