- Staying busy can feel like we're getting a lot done. What could be wrong with that? Well, just because we're being efficient doesn't mean we're being effective. Effectiveness means our work had the right impact and results. For many agile teams, much of this efficient versus effective question comes down to what's measured. A lot of teams measure velocity for example. But what does velocity really mean? Well it typically measures how many points a team can deliver, or how much output a team produces in what time frame. I see this as a metric focused on efficiency, but it doesn't guarantee effectiveness. Measuring the customer results and the metrics related to it will actually tell us how effective we are at delivering a product. So the real question becomes, how do we recognize when this is happening to ourselves or the team, and then, how do we fix it?
