Am I a manager or a leader?

- One of the most interesting conversations I have with both my undergrad and my grad students is the difference between leadership and management. I ask them what it means to be a manager versus what it means to be a great leader. I get responses like managers oversee people while leaders oversee big picture. Or managers are operational while leaders are idealistic. After a little bit of back and forth, we land on the distinction that leadership and management are distinct, but each requires the other if you wish to be great at either. There are things we do that are managing, and things that we do that are leadership. In this lesson, I want to help you understand the difference between and offer some ways you can develop leadership and management skills in ways that support both.
