- I'm sure you've experienced the classic brainstorm. Someone bounces around the office asking if anyone is free for a brainstorm in the board room. They try to lure people into the session with coffee and sugary treats. Then, they tell people the problem, stand in front of a flip chart, and wait for ideas. Come on. Come on, ideas. It's no wonder they're so ineffective, but what else can you do? Well, the answer is lots of things. Here are three suggestions. Firstly, get people to think independently. Research indicates that people explore a topic more broadly and generate more practical ideas when they work individually. So, before you even consider getting people together in a room, give them the brief a few days in advance and ask them to come to the meeting with at least 10 ideas.
