- If you think about traditional project management, the goal was to define and plan the entire project, commit to the estimated dates, and be held accountable to that plan. Waterfall project management came from manufacturing and engineering where a linear process makes sense. For example, building a house needs to follow a linear path where you'll always build the walls before you build the roof. But developing software isn't like building a house. In software the product is intangible, so exploration and experimentation are necessary. Following a linear path when it doesn't make sense is frustrating for everyone involved. In the case of agile, this frustration was the tipping point that led to the agile revolution.
