From the course: From Resisting to Embracing Lean: A Case Study

Additional 5S information

- So Ryan here, I want to introduce you to Yunel. And Yunel's one of our teammates in the, in LaSalle, and he's also a recent immigrant in the process of learning English. And I think he's, he's mastered it so. We're really happy to have him give you this quick presentation. - Good afternoon. You have seen the accident resolve that we have achieved recently. Now I will explain to you how can we achieve them. But first, I have two questions, please. Do you think that we can work efficiently in working conditions such as this? (laughter) This is a real picture for us a few years ago. - Wow. - Or maybe, in our homes, can we generate good quality of life with a kitchen like this? The answer is no, for sure. In order to work efficiently, we need to work on solid foundations. Solid foundations are for us, the three S: sorting, sweeping, and set in order. This is a new method that we have learned from the Japanese and that we have implemented one step at a time in our company in recent years. The first S means sorting out of our workplace all unnecessary items that becomes an obstacle for the productive process. The second S means maintaining as clean as possible our work environment. This also guarantees the quality in our finer products and generates a good state of mind in our team members. The third one means that there is a place for everything and everything in its place. In other words, it means being organized. This allows us to work in greater comfort and in case of losing or misplacing anything, we can identify the problem, solve it, and not stopping the continued flow of our production. As you have seen these are three very simple tools, but they are very effective. In our company, we set out to make this habit our standard. And one of the specific tasks is cleaning the bathroom. Everyday each team member has the responsibility to clean the bathroom as a way to reinforce these habits. Eliminating walls has been an additional task. In recent years, we have demolished nearly 30 walls in the whole building. As a way to facilitate the communication between the many company and the team member, and to streamline the production flow. Our workstations have been set on wheels, these allow us to move them in a flexible manner. For example, the area where we are right now is converted twice a month to a meeting area. To exchange information between the company board of directors and the team members. A special request from customers, production related matters and accomplishment of the gain sharing goals. A few minutes later, with the help of a team member who works here, everything goes back to normal, and this space being 100% productive area. As you can see that company's idea in recent year has been about not coming to work harder everyday, but about working smarter. This allows us to attain our three main objectives. Satisfying our customers, complying with the quarter standard, that half positions. Delivering highly competitive services in the market. Growing as a people. Since the company provides you with the tools that strengthen values such as responsibility, learning teamwork, and being trustworthy people. And lastly, but not of important lesson, being faithful to God. Is sustaining and managing the resource that have been place in our hands. I don't know if you have any question. At least for me, this was all for today. I really hope that you enjoy the rest of the day with the Techno Coatings family, thank you. - Thank you. - Awesome, and he's open for partnership. - It's okay? - Yeah, sure. - So how long have you been here, again? How long have you worked here? - Three years. - Three years. So what's been the biggest change in yourself? Not the company, yourself, what's been the biggest change? (laughter) - Yes. - [Ryan] I'll translate for you. - Yes. - So I think that the biggest change has been our mindset. I think that most difficult was at the beginning is that everybody who is around us just to understand the company's purpose. And so, all of these changes in the end translated to higher efficiency, more comfort in our working environment and above all, and it's something that the company really bet on, which is to grow as individuals. And so, we interact here 10-12 hours a day with each other and so these are tools that we can put in practice, and so we can have a better work day. So the biggest accomplishment, and at the same time the biggest challenge, has been changing the minds of the people. And then uniting them with the idea in joining the company and following it's purposes. - So, this is a strange question. So it's Sunday night, he's at home, and you're thinking about going back to work. Do you have a happy feeling or sad feeling, you know, remember this is the CEO. (Laughter) - And I mean genuinely, you know. - No, really, so this has been my only employment here in this country and you hear other teammates that have had other opportunities and other places of employment with other experiences. And so, I can only speak for my own. For me, I don't have, For me, I have no problems when I am thinking I have to go to work tomorrow morning, Monday, because the company has made a lot of efforts so that with at least for a while that the environment's as pleasant as possible. And also, there are people, you know, that we get along really well. There's always work related situations that happen, but that's normal part of working. But beyond that, there's a lot of willingness to help each other and to make that work day easier. So for me it's not a problem on Sunday night. (Laughter) - Okay, my last question. So there's somebody watching this video right now who is just getting started with Lean, they don't know much about it, and they're very skeptical, maybe even angry that there has to be changes. What's your best advice for that person? - I think that first thing is you can't be afraid. At the beginning, everything is difficult. And especially that year of changing peoples' habit and change the way which we work. And so, you know, sometimes you get stuck in a routine and so when you change that routine, then people will have fear. So the biggest thing is to let them know that the changes will be for the benefit of all. Separate from the high standards of efficiency in the productive side, definitely, the biggest achievement that I've been able to see has been the work environment. People come in the morning, you see smile on their faces. Beyond the actual work, we enjoy being here. And that's my, and I think that's, again, the biggest challenge with the Lead process. - Thank you. - Thank you, sir.
