- Almost everything you read about effective leadership mentions the vital characteristics of self-awareness, emotional intelligence and authenticity. The same is true when leading change, whether on site or remotely. The most successful leaders are those who are able to adapt their leadership style and create a positive climate for change, then successfully influence followers to respond and deliver that change. Author Daniel Goleman defines six basic styles of leadership based around their emotional intelligence. He suggests the best leaders are skilled at several and have the ability to switch between styles as the circumstances dictate.
