Adapting directiveness

- I had a client early in my career that was off the charts directive. He had a hard time not speaking his voice, not speaking his mind, not taking control. In coaching him on how to adapt to situations, I tried to get him to find a situation where he would say, "You know what I need to do? "I need to make sure that I'm heard," and he couldn't find one. If you fall on either end of the spectrum either often directive or seldom directive, it's easy to figure out how to adapt. You really only have one way to go, the opposite direction. Just as my client didn't need to think about ways to be more direct, someone on the other end of the spectrum rarely needs to think about how to be less controlling. Here's some tricks that can help you no matter where you fall on the spectrum, that can help you be more effective.
