Adaptability, not standardization

- For years, businesses have tried to create standard, repeatable processes. Today, that model simply doesn't work. Organizations must adapt to changing circumstances, new opportunities and technological advancements. Traditional PMOs create a standard approach to project delivery, and then enforce that through governance. The hope is if all projects use the same basic approach, project managers and teams will become more effective and efficient. But that's not how business operates today. Agile approaches exist alongside traditional waterfall methods, and hybrid versions that combine the two are becoming common. Projects are approved with the expectation that they will change.
