- In the late 1970s, research revealed a then shocking finding that in merely four minutes of interaction, you'd make a clear, hard to change impression on others. But how much could people possibly learn about you in only four minutes? It was the wrong question, and it turns out four minutes is an eternity. The reason why is at the heart of the fourth key factor that drives executive presence, the action factor, projection, how you project yourself to others. Research has chipped away at that first impression effect to the point that in some cases, mere snapshots of initial interaction, even a couple seconds, can lead to sustained impressions. To reinforce the point, in my seminars in organizations, I often have volunteers simply walk into the room, stand for a moment, and then take a seat while everyone observes them. With that mere sliver of exposure, observers tend to form impressions with over 80% similarity about questions like these. How confident is the person, how likable?…
