- Etiquette regarding following up on a text message is an area that's still being defined. In general, people expect a fast response to a text message, so try to reply within 12 hours maximum. How do you follow up with someone when you've not received a response? Let's look at some examples. How would you adjust this message? In this sample text, it's difficult to determine what message the sender's referring to. If you're following up on a text message that received no response, be specific about which message you're talking about. An example of a more specific text would be like this. Just like with email, always be polite when following up. Please and thank you are still appropriate in a text message. For a more causal relationship, the abbreviation TY can be used for thank you instead. Wait a full 12 hours to follow up on a text message that's not been responded to.
