Join Suzanna Kaye for an in-depth discussion in this video Organizing and naming virtual files, part of Going Paperless: Start to Finish.
- Your virtual files can be organized…much like your paper files in your file cabinet.…On a PC, the main program for storing your files…is Windows Explorer.…For Mac, it's Finder.…Your cloud storage options, which I talk about later…in this chapter, also work based on the same principles.…You have main file folders, which contain subfolders.…And then these subfolders hold your individual files.…I'll use Windows Explorer as an example.…Much like your home filing cabinet, you start with…main folders made up of broad categories.…
Categories such as Personal and Work…may be your first level of folders.…Your next level of subfolders is where…the category gets narrower.…In this example, in the Personal folder,…there are the folders Finance, Health and Hobbies.…Each next level of subfolders contains…more narrow categories than the folder that contains it.…The nice thing about organizing virtual files in this way…is you can create many more subfolders…with narrower categories than you would want to do…in a paper filing system where space would become an issue.…
