As a business analyst you’re going to come across a number of different personality types. You’re going to have the driver that just wants the results, the outcomes, and just get it to me, and the words they use is just, why it’s only this, or just do that. In other words you need to be prepared for them to talk in the big picture and context level. You then deal with the expressive people that are going to be sharing information around, frustrations or excitement and how it actually is going to involve the team, and how that’s going to have an impact on the values and the structure of how things fit together from a personal perspective.
You then deal with amiable people that to be honest they don’t care if it happens this way or that way, just tell me what you want and I’ll do it. In other words they don’t like investing in the change. They’re waiting for the change to arrive, and then they will support it regardless of what actually happens. Then of course you have those people who are very analytical detail focused. These are people that don’t want to be rushed, they don’t like to take risks, but more importantly they’re just absolute absorbers of information. When you actually go and engage with these four different types, with the driver be concise, be on time, tell them what the outcome and results are, and more importantly what are the next steps.
When you’re dealing with expressives I really want you to be focusing around how they feel, how this is all going to fit together, and what the impact to the team, and what they can do and contribute to it. Amiable people, it’s not getting them to make decisions. It’s getting them more to verify things than be able to do it and at the end of the day they don’t like taking risks. Talk about the fact that what they’re sharing with you is not necessarily black or white. Then when it comes to analytical, send the information ahead of time. These are people who love information they absorb it, so send some information ahead of time, but when you’re there you need to be accurate.
For them being accurate and being precise is what is their personality type. As you can see these four different personality types preparing for them, and actually engaging with them is really really important, but never ever be late to a meeting for a driver, because at the end of the day they’ve probably got back to back meetings, and you’ll never get in their diary again.
