- On a recent flight, I sat next to two people who work together. They were going on and on about how they just discovered that their coworker received a bigger bonus than they did. They couldn't understand how this had happened. After all, they'd been at the company for two years longer. I'm positive this discovery left them feeling disengaged with work. While we often hear that compensation isn't the only motivator or the only thing that will attract great talent, it does matter and communication about it matters too. Too often, employers feel they have to keep their lips sealed about decisions and managers only share little tidbits of information when they see fit but if you can be more transparent, your total rewards program will have more value for your employees.
