The power of not knowing

- It used to be that you almost never heard people in the business world say, I don't know, or, I'm sorry, I was mistaken. Most people view these kinds of statements as a sign of weakness, especially if they came from managers or leaders. It was often more acceptable to make something up than to admit that you didn't know the answer. It was even worse to admit that you had made a mistake and apologize for it. It was much easier to blame someone else for it. The real trap of this kind of thinking is that it assumes a person can't learn. Think about it. If you have all the answers and don't make mistakes, how could you possibly learn something new? Why would you have to? Quite often people's egos prevent them from learning because they don't want to be seen as ignorant or needing help. There's a Zen saying that goes, In a beginner's mind there are many possibilities.
