- People decide, within a shockingly short period of time, whether they believe you're on their side or if you're working against them. Sometimes, people walk into a business already assuming you're against them. Think, for example, if you walked onto a used car lot on the seedy side of town. Weary of the stereotypical car salesman, you've already got your guard up. In your mind, it's you against them. But if the roles were reversed, and you happened to be an upstanding professional selling cars in that lot, you have to know upfront that people are already assuming you're not on their side, and you have to act and adjust accordingly. That's why first impressions are important. Now, you may have already heard about the power of first impressions, but I want to challenge you to think of it in a different light.
