- I had someone say there's an extension to reading, and writing, and 'rithmetic, as they would say (chuckles). And you take your reading, and writing, and 'rithmetic into projects, and it extends to relationships and risk. The best project managers I've seen have those two things as a fundamental tenent as to how they do their work. They're focused on establishing relationships with people because when you have good relationships with people, you have trust, and with trust comes honesty.
It's quicker, and it's more efficient, and it ultimately helps you get things done. If you could be very, very efficient in your communication, but very honest in your communication, you can ultimately solve problems more quickly. So that's the relationship piece. The other thing is is that project management involves managing risk. If there was no risk, you wouldn't need a project manager. It's a risk of miscommunication between people. It's a risk of trying to do things too quickly.
It's a risk of not involving the right people, all sorts of risks. So when a project manager approaches their day, when they're driving into work, or taking the train, or whatever the case may be, and they think, what is the thing that could most create trouble for my project today, and that's how they allocate their time, that risk based thinking, is ultimately the difference between project managers that are going to manage small or average projects, or those that are really going to get the juicy, complex projects because they have that mindset and that intuition for how to manage risk.
